PORTLAND, Ore. – A woman in her 70s was injured Friday night after she was hit and trapped by a MAX train.
The accident happened just before 9:30 p.m. and witnesses say the woman fell between MAX cars and got pinned between the train and the platform as it was pulling into the station near Northwest 6th Avenue and Northwest Davis Street. Police said a cane the woman was using may have gotten clipped by the train or slipped off the platform. The train could not stop in time.
Witnesses say she was conscious and told them she is 76 years old.
It took rescuers about 45 minutes to pull her from beneath the train. She was taken to the hospital and transit police said she appears to have only suffered minor injuries. However, she did say that she could not feel her legs.
MAX service was stopped and shuttle buses were used on 5th and 6th avenues to transport riders. MAX service resumed just before 10:30 p.m.
Wed Producer's note: This version corrects the train coming into the station not leaving it.
