News

PORTLAND, Ore. – A motorcyclist is dead after he hit a TriMet bus Friday, according to a TriMet spokeswoman.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. near the intersection of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Bryant Street.

According to the TriMet spokeswoman, the bus was stopped and at a bus stop when the motorcyclists hit it at a high rate of speed. She said there were 15 to 20 passengers on the No. 6 bus at the time.

UPDATE: We now know that passengers were disembarking at the time of the crash. Witnesses told police that the motorcycle rider was driving southbound in the left lane. They say he then moved to the right lane where the bus was stopped and unloading passengers. However, the motorcyclist did not stop in time and instead crashed into the back of the bus.

The motorcyclist - now identified as 39-year-old Michael Anthony Ford of Southeast Portland - was taken to the hospital were he later died. Police say he was wearing a helmet.

None of the bus passengers were injured.
