Bus hits Pearl District walkers: How did it happen? | Transportation
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
PORTLAND, Ore. - We have a view from KATU's Jet Ranger 2 of the scene of a bus collision that killed two and injured three pedestrians, one critically, in Northwest Portland over the weekend. The video above also maps out the collision details we've been able to piece together.
Investigators are calling the accident "complex."
The bus was heading west on Northwest Glisan Street, and turned south onto Broadway Boulevard. The traffic signal was green, and the walk sign was on.
The five people were crossing Broadway Boulevard.
Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly where they were, and which lane the bus was in, when they collided.
We know that vehicles were parked on either side of Broadway and Glisan. We don't know if those vehicles blocked the bus driver's view.
The bus driver is Sandi Day, who was hired three years ago to work for the Portland mass transit agency TriMet. TriMet officials have said Day knew the route, and was at the end of her shift.
She now is on paid leave, and continues to cooperate with Portland Police Bureau investigators.
Surveillance video from the bus has been turned over to the bureau. On Tuesday Portland Police Spokesperson Mary Wheat said detectives have reviewed the video of the people being hit in the crosswalk, but she would not say anything more.
